A Trip To San Diego

...Well, almost San Diego!

(Photos lost during site migration.)

Sept. 28 - Oct. 1, 2006

My son, Dean, lives in Oceanside, near San Diego, and we visit about every three months to keep up with his growing family. I usually drop the jacks at the Flying J Plaza in Frazier Park, near the Tejon Summit of the "Grapevine" the first night of the trip. I then brave the LA freeways the next day. If I time it right, and the freeways aren't too slow, it's about a three hour drive from there to Oceanside. I always return home early Sunday morning and streak through the LA freeways while most of the city still sleeps.

The Tejon fire raged nearby, and fire trucks motored by the Flying J Plaza night and day. This group was getting snacks at the store when I shot this photo. This is the direction to the fire. I also saw many heading away as they worked the fire in shifts.

Heading south the next morning I saw a lot of blackened grassland below the summit. The fire burned thousands of acres.

I stopped in Fresno to visit my cousins Merle Jean and Ken. We had lunch and I was on my way. I spent some of my growing up years with Merle Jean.

 "Camped" at Guajome Park, Oceanside.

Gramps tosses the ball in the backyard with Dean and little Connor.

Dean and Connor before the baseball game that Connor played when I visited. Nope, I didn't go. Grumpy, crippled up old men don't find such gatherings very pleasant. But Connor's team won without me!
