Another Road Trip to Oregon!

Umpqua River near Roseburg.

(Photos lost during site migration.)

Monday, September 17, 2007: Home to Yreka, CA via SR99, I-5: 304 Miles.

This month's RV adventure would be our annual visit to Winston, Oregon where our friends moved from Ripon last year. We make it a two day trip, spending the night in Yreka, CA on the way, then arriving on the second day.

Yreka is just above the Shasta area on a plateau in the mountains. It is a small town, and apparently so friendly and crime-free that the local Wal-Mart doesn't bother to hire security to patrol its parking lot. That makes it the only Wal-Mart I know of to not need outside security - even though the place is close all night and a lot of merchandise lines the front of the building. Security cameras are evident around the parking lot, however, and as usual, the lot is kept well lit all night long.

We shopped a bit upon our arrival - and again before leaving the next morning. We patronize Wal-Mart often and enjoy shopping at such a friendly place that welcomes us to stay overnight all across the country. We are unabashed Wally-Dockers

Tuesday, 9-18-07: Yreka, CA to Winston, OR via I-5: 142 Miles.

If two Wally visits weren't enough, we also stopped at the Talent, OR Wal-Mart to purchase our fairly expensive supplement pills tax free. There is no sales tax in Oregon and when we can, we're always happy to not pay taxes.

A beautiful Oregon rest area.

We arrived at the home of our friends, Rich and Juanita, around noon. We parked the coach, dropped the jacks and extended the slide for some extra elbow room for the next couple of day. We're as good as home in the coach, and we don't infringe upon our hosts too much when living in the coach. That makes for a better visit for everyone.

Wednesday and Thursday at Winston, OR friends' home.

Our days visiting our friends were filled with conversation, dining out and sight   seeing. This area of Oregon is filled with beautiful views along the Umpqua River system and the famous Wildlife Safari drive through zoo. We spent much of Wednesday driving along the rivers in the area and visiting the zoo. Check out the photo album for this adventure to see many beautiful scenes and entertaining, up close and personal photos of wild animals as we drove through their fenced habitats.

There were bears and antelopes and many other wonderful critters to be seen at the Wildlife Safari.

Thursday, 9-20-07: Winston, OR to Canyonville, Or and the Seven Feathers Casino via I-5: 21 Miles.

Dale, Lavonne, Juanita, Rich

We left our friend’s home after lunch and headed the few miles down I-5 to Canyonville to spend the night at 7 Feathers Casino. The place was a first class affair with hundreds of slots. The slots that interested us were in a smoke free room that made our couple hours of gaming pleasant. We managed to win about $5 for our efforts. We headed back to the coach for dinner and turned in early. We talked about driving all the way home the next day – a bit over 400 miles.

Friday, 9-21-07: Canyonville, OR to Home: 427 Miles.

We weren’t sure whether we’d stop in at a Wal-Mart store for the night or drive all the way home. It would depend on how I felt as the day wore on. As usual, the closer we got to home, the more we wanted to get there. And so we did. We arrived home about 5:00 in the afternoon. It was a good trip and we enjoyed the visiting and the traveling. Still, it’s always great to get home!
